Music:: Pennywise – Reason To Believe
I’m not sure how I missed this, then again I’m not really paying too much attention to what’s coming out these days. Too much other stuff that I need to do.
To me, Pennywise is basically the AC/DC of punk. It’s familiar, it’s consistent and it sounds like an extension of there past 10 albums. You know what. I love that. I hate when bands decide to “explore”, 99.9% of the time it’s too jarring for the fans. I love that even without hearing a single track from the new CD I can pay my money and feel confident that I won’t regret it.
So as always, Pennywise delivers. You know what to expect, you get what you expect and it’s good. “Reason To Believe” feels like a natural progression from their previous work. They introduce new elements in small doses that don’t make you forget that you’re listening to a Pennywise disc.
It’s on repeat and getting plenty of spins. Thanks guys. Money well spent.
Slayer’s “Christ Illusion” is the latest addition to their catalog. It rips, it’s brutal and oh so good. I’m not a huge Slayer fan, I have my moments where I’ll get hooked on them for a few days then walk away for a several months. (One exception is “Seasons in the Abyss” one of my desert island albums). I’ve listened to it several times so far but not enough to really pull any favorites from it. Probably not even enough to write this post either but I have some time so I’m posting. More later.
Comparissons aside “The Crusade” is a big departure from “Ascendancy”. It’s less “nu-metal” and “metalcore”. Which in many of the interviews I read with the band’s guitarists is something they really focused on. They appeared to want to distance themselves from that genre. There’s no screaming that I can recall such as what was clearly a staple of their first two albums. One thing that can be said about this album is that it brings back that classic speedmetal and thrash metal sound from the late 80’s early 90’s. Guitar solos are quite a bit more front and center and in some instances there is quite a resemblance to Metallica, but I really hate jumping on the band wagon of comparrisons.
I’ve been a fan of Wednesday 13 since Murderdoll’s, in the scheme of things that’s not very long (3 albums). My friend Tom turned me on to Murderdolls during one of his visits and I’ve been hooked ever since. It may take me a bit to pick up the disks and they don’t see nearly as much rotation in iTunes these days but I still love listening to them. Yes they are a bit campy and almost goofy at times but they are a lot of fun. The music is just great straight up rock. Kind of glamy at times with Monster movie lyrics. Its perfect for this time of year.
